Popular Science:
Should Mars Be Independent, Or Just A Colony Of Earth?
http://www.popsci.com/astrobiologist-wants-liberate-future-mars-colonies
Part B: My analysis of the article in regards to its impact of the future.
I think that in
our lifetime we will have a need to look elsewhere in our universe for a planet
that can sustain life. With all of the carbon emissions and pollution we
produce everyday I think that the earth will no longer be able to sustain our
life. The fact that we cut down so many trees to produce paper is in indicator
that we need to reconsider what or how we are producing and or creating
materials like paper in our life. We are literally killing a good portion of
the plant life produces our oxygen. We live in a culture of plastic and
disposable products, and we may not know the future implications of enjoying such
daily luxuries for many years. One possible solution to our problem is to
create a colony on another planet, like Mars. This article talks about
protecting the rights of people who may eventually settle on Mars. Honestly, I think this is absurd to even
consider at this point, when we barely have equality or equal rights on Earth,
especially in America.
C) - The Bullet Answers:
1)
The global impact, national impact, and local /
personal impact.
Colonizing other planets may seem like a
cool idea, but globally it would take a ton of resources to make a
self-sustaining environment in a way in which different nations can come
together. Gives humans a change to build a better environment. Not everyone can
afford to go.
2) Forecast the range of
impact over the short term (the next 2 months to 2 years), to the long term
(next 20 years to 20 + decades).
In the next 20 years, I believe we will
see more advances in building sustainable colonies on other planets. Next
decade, I believe we will have a better understanding of what colonization on
other planets will require scientifically and politically.
3) What could you do,
or could be done to create the greatest positive
impact on the future.”
Make it affordable option for all people.
Equality for all individuals. A chance for everyone to be connected or working
for the greater good of the colony and the planet. Both planets become better
and more sustainable and balanced.
4 4) “What could you do, or could be done to create the greatest negative impact on the future.”
I think that it may cause friction between
Earth and people on Mars if we try to regulate what they do or try to exploit
resources. This could result in an
interplanetary war or war between nations on Earth trying to exert control over
Mars.
5 5) “Which
region of the future” does this related closest most to or does this fit in
between – or perhaps a region of the future you’d like to define for yourself.
Biotech and human tech.
Part B) Questions for class:
What can we do here, on
Earth, to ensure rights for everyone?
What makes us think
colonizing other planets is beneficial?
How would a colony on Mars affect
the relationships between nations on this planet?
What are some drawbacks as
far as affordability?
Should Mars be established as
an independent planet?
What are some potential
benefits to having a colony on Mars?
This topic is so difficult to analyze.
ReplyDeleteWe think colonizing other planets is beneficial because it fits into the narrative of technology and progress. So what if we ruin the earth? We'll just use all our intelligence to go to space. We would still be dependent on the Earth in the longterm, however. Life cannot exist without ecosystems. I don't think any kind of technology will change this.
The logistics of it all seem like something that would cause mass amounts of local, national, and global conflict.
I can't imagine living on a bubble on a barren planet would be a life worth living.
I don't know, man.
